Three-Masted Brigantine, Classic Sailing Vessel
The three-masted brigantine was a versatile sailing vessel widely used between the 18th and 19th centuries for both trade and military operations. Combining square sails on the foremast with fore-and-aft rigging on the remaining masts, it offered an ideal balance between speed, stability, and maneuverability.
Many brigantines were lightly armed with cannons, allowing them to defend against pirates or engage in naval skirmishes when required. This dual-purpose capability made them especially valuable for both merchant ventures and military missions.
